COVID-19 anxiety is ramping up due to school closings, quarantines, grocery store chaos, and constant bombardment by the media. This can be very stressful for families. We want you to know we - Image Church - are here for you. Please focus on these goals:
- Quality Time: The world is being forced to slow down. This means we have the chance to spend great quality time with your family. Use this time for family worship. Below we have listed different tools to help you worship together with your family.
- Personal Safety: the vast majority of people infected by COVID-19 will have a mild illness, particularly our children.
- Community Responsibility: the CDC and Health Department are trying to limit or slow the spread. Self-quarantine and social distancing are being implemented for these purposes.
Stay healthy by practicing good hand washing, avoiding crowds, and resisting the temptation to touch your face. It is safe to play outside if the weather permits. However, if anyone in your family is sick, please stay home. Do your best to isolate symptomatic family members. Remind everyone to cough and sneeze into their elbows or use a mask to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets. Clean all surfaces frequently with disinfectant.
In the meantime, shut off the TV and give yourself and your children a break. When possible, keep their schedules normal. Play family games, read stories, color, and enjoy music together. We have a list of resources to choose from below this message. Talk to your children about their fears. Reassure them. Matthew 6 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on...Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?...But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
You are a role model for your family. This is a perfect time to teach your children about how we as Christians handle stress and fear. We can also teach them how we Love our Neighbors by checking on your neighbors, family members, and friends. By caring for each other, our community can continue to see the Gospel on display. Please stay safe and let us know how we can help.
This pandemic will require a fundamental shift in how we do ministry—for weeks and possibly months. It is already forcing us to ask, "What is absolutely essential for the church to be the church?" I think this passage captures it well. Seek first the kingdom and his righteousness. He will take care of the rest.
